Cherry A novel Nico Walker Books
Full disclosure: I know the author and am not a literary critic. I'll therefore refrain from garland tossing or designating its genius. I will call it an accomplishment that deserves much of the praise and attention being heaped on it.The story told is a distant reality to certain segments of the American population, and uncomfortably close to the skin of others. Depending on your personality and affiliations you will find an accurate reflection of life, or a fascinating, voyeuristic escape into the world of the desperate. Personally, at times, it was both for me.
It's a poetic and vulgar book and that is the point. Fans of Bukowsi, Burroughs (see: Roy from Junky), D. Johnson, H.S. Thompson and Palahniuk will lap this up and impatiently wait on seconds. Interested to see what comes next from Walker.

Cherry A novel Nico Walker Books Reviews
Brilliant debut. This generation’s The Things They Carried.
Every once in a long while, I read a novel, poem or story that makes me wish I still taught US and World Literatures, something I did for over forty years before retiring twelve years ago. I would assign Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground" and then Walker's "Cherry." This novel is going to be with us for at least a few centuries. It has all the requirements of classic literature.
Nico Walker's Cherry is clearly not for the faint of heart. Graphic sex, violence, and drug use dominate this novel, but, for those of us not immediately turned off, the overall reward is worth it. This is a fascinating, yet heartbreaking story that is all too real for many Americans. Happy to add this one to my permanent collection.
The author is about my age. I went to college in 2004, had friends that joined the military and went to the Middle East. The book feels like a complete time capsule. At one point there is a line about the author not having a cell phone. An odd idea in this time, but I was immediately transported back to the early 00's as a 18 year old idiot kid and my idiot friends and one friend didn't have a cell phone, but would borrow ours and just kept a folded up piece of notebook paper in his wallet with all the important numbers (mainly of girls) that he needed.
As a veteran I was interested in reading about the unnamed narrators experiences with war and PTSD and how that affected his life and so forth. I did not expect to find the rest of the book so interesting, and I am ashamed to say I read it all too quickly. For those that do not know this is labeled as a fictional story but it is not, it is a true story (names changed etc.) which made the journey all that more fascinating for me knowing that there are people out there who actually do these crazy things and live their life this way. All together a raw and uncensored look into a life of desperation, who is not good enough to even be an anti-hero, but some how you still kinda like the guy anyway.
Throughout this book, with all the mean nasty things are going on, you think our narrator is going to turn pure evil at any point. But he never does. As a huge fan of Dan Fante’s novels, I can take the dark. I actually need to know this stuff as a citizen of the world. But as with Dan Fante, I depend on the voice at the center to never make excuses. Cherry’s brilliance, and it’s captivating hold on the reader, come from the clarity of mind from one who should have no clarity of mind. It’s the kind of book that deepens the soul . . . and for a lot of people you meet along the way, you really hope that life turned out better for them. For the rest, and for the hold of the drugs themselves, you’re reminded of why the world is a very dangerous and scary place.
If the cover didn't already sell you the book, maybe I can help.
If you like Chuck Palahniuk, Bret Easton Ellis, or other writers that critically analyze society and it's darker side, you'll love Nico Walker. This punchy read tells it like it is, and then some, for the desperate among us. This is not written for the decency society, so if you refer to everybody's favorite word as the "f word," this one might not be for you. But if you expect more out of your books than a light story with a happy ending, buy this book.
It's not hard to see why a publishing house as big as Knopf took a chance on Nico Walker; from the first page it's clear this is something new. Something original.
