Nearly Departed in Deadwood Deadwood Humorous Mystery Book 1 edition by Ann Charles CS Kunkle Paranormal Romance eBooks
Violet is a 30 something single mother who is immature, has anger issues, uses juvenile sarcasm for humor, constantly reminds us that she gave birth to twins, and lies a lot. Like all of us Violet is doing the best she can with a long line of bad luck, some of which can be blamed on her poor decision making skills. Apparently she's good in the sack, and cannot concentrate on much of anything but her lust for Doc. Violet is the type of co-worker we dread to be saddled with. If she spent as time trying to sell houses as she spends on all her curricular activities, she could make some money and get a place of her own.So why read the book? It is, at times, actually humorous, has other characters worth caring about, a story line so far fetched that it is interesting if you can suspend a need to make sense of it all. I have been listening to the narrated story and the narrator is often terrible due to the peculiar accents she tries to carry off.
All in all I am enjoying the story, can't stand the narration but I listen to it at work and when I concentrate on the spreadsheets I tune out the story then back up and re-listen. The first 5 books take place in a few months time so do not expect to see any emotional growth in the characters, try not to let the pages and pages of mind blowing sex bore you, and do not look for reasons of why or how Violet has endeared herself to so many otherwise intelligent characters and you will be able to move on to the next book.

Nearly Departed in Deadwood Deadwood Humorous Mystery Book 1 edition by Ann Charles CS Kunkle Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
This review does not have any spoilers in it. The author's writing is hilarious and she does a good job laying out her characters personalities. Everyone in the book is a weirdo and I mean everyone. I disagree with the other reviewer’s assessment that the sex-starved nature of two of the female characters was inappropriate. At no time does either of these characters ask the man to save the day or use sex to get ahead. I appreciated the authors realism in portraying a single mother with two children as something other than just an asexual mom. Women want sex just like other mammals, it's just that we get slammed for it unlike our counterparts. The book was incredibly funny, it seemed like the main character was acting a comedy of errors. On the other hand the reason I did not give this book a five-star was because of that very same character. It was difficult to tell if her comedy of errors was on purpose or if the author believes her character to be the best of women. The character is such a dumb dumb in many situations I could definitely see her as the person people are yelling at on the screen in an actual horror film. The girl who everyone's yelling at “no don't go into the woods” that girl. Also it was good that the character pointed out she wouldn't be getting any mom of the Year Awards because after reading this book I would definitely say that she was not a good parent figure at all. So each book has characters you do and don't like but when it's the main character and not the lovable sidekick who's an idiot and a bad parent I'd say that's worth losing this star over. I’ll read thebaecond series in a few weeks because I’m interested to see if the character brightens up and because frankly I think the authors wit might be able to overcome poor casting so to speak.
This was definitely a quirky read for me. I'm sure that a number of readers will be frustrated because it doesn't fit neatly into one category.
When in the mood for escapist reading, I am a fan of humorous romance (Penny Reid and Ruthie Knox) and of paranormal romance (J.R. Ward, Jeaniene Frost, Karen Marie Moning). Most of all I am a fan of good writing.
Dearly Departed is a well - written book. You might be somewhat frustrated with certain elements in the story or because it is more of a literary casserole than a straightforward meat and potatoes read, but Ann Charles deserves kudos for creating a very funny, well - written novel.
Here's the opening paragraph
"The first time I came to Deadwood, I got shot in the a&&. Now, twenty-five years later, as I stared into the double barrels of Old Man Harvey’s shotgun, irony was having a fiesta and I was the piñata."
Some of my other favorites
"What’s a ‘Broker Associate’?” “It’s someone who is going to lose her job if she doesn’t sell a house in the next three weeks.”
"Men had a history of fouling up my life, from burning down my house to leaving me knocked up with twins. These days, I liked my relationships how I liked my eggs over-easy."
"I picked up my stapler with every intention of imprinting ‘Swingline’ on Ray’s forehead via blunt force trauma."
Violet is the single mom of young twins who is struggling financially. The kids make for great secondary characters and there are many funny scenes as Violet tries to juggle her personal life with her other responsibilities.
“I’m going on this date, even if it means carrying a barf bag in my purse and slipping off to the restroom every ten minutes.”
"Turns out being single in Deadwood made me as popular as free pancakes at IHOP."
"I may not have dated since acid-wash jeans were in style , but I knew a brushoff when I heard one."
I thought the dialogue was great and had a number of chuckles. I certainly liked the novel well enough to be looking forward to Book 2.
