Pilot Mark Martin must flee his home world of Yale when the Erethizon theocracy overwhelms the defenses. His father, an influential senator, is captured. Now Mark must find a way to save his dad before the resistance is crushed, and with it, all hope of ending the occupation. A chance encounter with a smuggler captain may be his only hope. Will they help, or will the crew sell him to the alien invaders?

The Burning Son the first book in a new is a classic space opera series set in a dark future. Yale was a thriving colony until the aliens showed up. Their demand, join our religion and serve our theocracy.

Mark Martin was a pilot in Yale's space navy. When the stalemate crumbles, he was forced to leave the military and join a band of pirates. The smugglers were not the marines he's used to serving with. With them he will explore a galaxy full of adventure.

The Burning Son eBook TH Leatherman

So what does this book remind me of? Firefly’s team of space smugglers with a dash of Han Solo’s bravado and flying skills, set against a backdrop of a universe at war.

Burning Son is filled with complex, endearing characters that have real problems and real emotions, set in a vividly realized universe. The aliens aren’t just window dressing; each has their own culture and goals. The Muscats remind me of a saner version of Rocket the Raccoon out of Guardians of the Galaxy; they’re small, mechanically adept, and loyal to a fault. If I had a spaceship I’d definitely search out some Muscats to sign up. The PorcuBears are massive creatures covered with spines, but they’re also religious fanatics intent on spreading their faith, such as it is, to every world. This makes them both dangerous and intriguing. The settled worlds from the Terran diaspora are also unique and filled with details and history that makes this novel feel like a window into the future.

Yale, the home world of our hero, Martin, falls to the Porcubears in the opening sequence of the novel. We learn only in flashbacks how peaceful and elegant the world was before the Porcubears invaded. Martin and his sister, Sophie, flee on the smuggler’s ship the Leonard Fox. There they face multiple challenges on multiple worlds. Martin is determined to find a way to free his home world, but in the process he finds himself in increasing danger and subjected to mysterious threats. The plot twists are unexpected and there are scenes that will have you cheering out loud, leading to a finale that gives hope for another in the series. I had such a great time reading this novel. I highly recommend it.

The Burning Son eBook TH Leatherman Reviews

I enjoyed this first book in the series. It's a good introduction to the characters. The story is a Firefly space opera story with lots of action. The characters grow in you as the story moves along. A good read!
Good premise, cool and well thought-out alien races, and solid dialogue. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who emjoys sci-fi. The ending did feel a little rushed to me, but that was the only even slightly false note. Looking forward to the sequel (next on my reading list, I just bought it!)
A fun read, great characters, wonderful sense of humor! This book didn't let me go and now I can't wait for the next installment. You can tell Mr. Leatherman enjoyed writing this.
Very much enjoyed this new authors take on space opera action and adventure. I look forward to more exciting reads.
I enjoyed this book very much. It kept my attention and was hard to put down when I had things to do. The characters were well developed and imaginative. The ending was a real surprise. I definitely recommend this book to friends and family who are science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts or are adventurous readers. I'm looking forward to book 2 "Marque of the Son". I can't wait to see what's next!
Standard trope rich and highly skilled, also highborn, perseveres through many challenges and some deep heartache. Fate of worlds and a walk among beings with strange abilities and cultures, and (mostly) darn good folk besides. While "this is not literature" and twenty-odd typos kept out, the takeaway is a feeling of having spent good time with folks you can admire and respect.
I read this book in two sittings. I liked the main characters and was intrigued by the Pythia character. I liked the diversity of the species with me favoring the Muscat. Though I love science fiction, I have become an on again-off again reader due to reading so many different genre. This had the right amount of tech in it to satisfy me without being to much. (I have had to read too much technical professionally and therefore do not enjoy it much in my pleasure reading.). The main reason I held back a star, was for the same reason no one wants to watch a "who dunnit" with me...I was fairly certain of who the mole was about halfway through. But then there are only a handful of the authors I read that surprise me on a regular basis. I have already recommended this book to others. That is all I am going to say about this book as I do not like reviews that go in detail about the entire plot, I like to experience the book for myself before any in depth discussions. Now, if Mr. Leatherman will just put out the next book in the series.....
