Had I known this book ended.. stopped... right smack in the middle I would never ever have purchased it. I absolutely have NO regard for authors who end their books with a cliffhanger to try to force you to purchase the next book to find out what happens..
In fact, I gave this author a stellar review for The Fourth Monkey, because I thought it was a stand alone novel.. And Yes, I eagerly purchased this 2nd book in the Sam Porter series, thinking that it too would stand on its own, but feature the same characters...
I mean, that’s why we love Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, and John Sanford’s Lucas Davenport.
We can read those books in any order we choose and it’s not dependent on its predecessors, nor are we forced to buy the next one to find out the end of the story..
If I could take back my review of The Fourth Monkey I would..
Well guess what? This little trick won’t work on me. I could give a rat’s patuddy how this series ends.. I refuse to buy another novel by this author...
I hate being shisted.... Why not do what the great Stephen King did when he published The Green Mile, or The Dark tower? You knew up front they were serial novels... No big secrets.
I’m so mad I could spit... And go to Amazon and request a refund...

OH. MY. GOSH!

May I please have the next book now?

The Fourth Monkey Killer was one of my favorite thrillers last year. I was left wanting for more. J. D. Barker listened to his readers and he has given them a present in the form of The Fifth To Die.

Like so many other readers, I was dying to know more about Anson and detective Sam Porter. I couldn't wait to know where was the story taking us!

At the end of 4MK, Anson told Sam, he was ready to find his mother. I was thinking nothing good could come from it, right?

The Fifth to Die opens with the discovery of a girl frozen in a lake. Sam and his team are called to the scene. Nothing makes sense, the girl seems to have drowned in salt water and her clothes belong to another missing girl. It seems the city of Chicago has another serial killer on the loose.

Sadly, Sam won't be able to follow up on the case. Not soon after discovering the body of Ella Reynold, he's in trouble with his boss, work, and with the FBI. You see, Sam couldn't let it go. He's still searching for the 4MK. He's been doing his own investigation on the side and this is a no-no for his superiors.

The Fifth to Die had me in a stage of complete wonder. I was trying to piece things together with the little clues J. D. Barker was spreading throughout the pages. There were multiple storylines, another diary by 4MK and the sense of urgency in finding any of the girls alive. The cast was fantastic. Sam, Anson, Clair, Nash, Kloz and Agent Poole all had a purpose.

Now let's talk about the ending. Major cliffhanger. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the conclusion of this excellent series.

Kudos to J. D. Barker for following with a solid sequel.

Okay I read the first book and believed maybe it would be better...wine improves with age. I kept up my expectations. The author failed miserably. Basically a formula book using the practice of bouncing back and forth from scene to scene to try to build intrigue and advancement. Builds confusion. Also the main character from the first book whom you wonder how can he be so stupid.....well the author tries to make him dumber and the main antagonist more brilliant....this is where he starts jumping dead sharks over and over again. Disgusting. This time the entire police and FBI are to made to look like jackasses (does the author hate law enforcement?). And worse you spend your money on this book and SPOILER ALERT you are left high and dry in the middle of a paragraph in a chapter.) I deserve my money back !!!!! Spent all day bedridden and this is how the tripe is finished. Dear readers don't bother buying wasting your money on book one and two. Is a rip off. I was robbed. Would love credits to account. Worst I have read in years.
